Adding SEO Keywords on Squarespace

You’ve probably heard that SEO is important if you want your website to be found on Google. And while “search engine optimization” can sound intimidating, one of the most important parts is actually pretty simple:

👉 Using the right keywords in the right places.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to add keywords to your Squarespace website — the human way.

No tech talk, no overcomplication.

First — What Are SEO Keywords, Really?

Keywords are the words or phrases people type into Google when they’re looking for something. Think:

  • “best wedding photographer in Chicago”

  • “custom furniture in Austin”

  • “Squarespace designer for therapists”

Your goal? Sprinkle these words throughout your site so search engines (and people) know what your website is all about.

Where Should You Add Keywords in Squarespace?

There’s no magic button that says “Insert SEO here” — but there are key places where keywords matter. Let’s break them down.

📝 1. Page Titles

Your page title (not to be confused with the title on the page) is what shows up in Google search results and browser tabs. Squarespace lets you customize this in the SEO settings for each page.

How to do it:

  • Go to Pages → (Click a page) → Settings → SEO

  • Add a clear, keyword-friendly title like:
"Wedding Photography in Chicago | Grace Lens Studio"

✅ Keep it under 60 characters if possible — Google trims longer titles.

📄 2. Page Descriptions

This is the little summary that shows up under your title in search results. It’s your chance to sell the click.

How to do it:

  • Same spot: Page → Settings → SEO → Description

  • Write 1–2 natural sentences that include your main keyword

  • Example:
"I’m a Chicago-based wedding photographer capturing timeless moments for modern couples. Explore my portfolio and book your date today."

✅ Keep it under 160 characters. Think of it like a mini ad.

✍️ 3. Headings and Text on the Page

Use keywords in your:

  • Headings (like H1, H2)

  • Paragraph text

  • First 100 words of each page

But here’s the key: Write for humans first. Google’s smart — it knows when you’re stuffing keywords just to rank.

Bad:

"Best wedding photographer Chicago Chicago best photographer in Chicago weddings."

Better:

"Looking for a wedding photographer in Chicago who captures real, joyful moments? You’re in the right place."

✅ Use natural language. One keyword per section is enough.

🖼️ 4. Image File Names and Alt Text

Before uploading images, rename them to something meaningful. Then add alt text (which helps with SEO and accessibility).

Instead of:
IMG_2048.jpgwedding-ceremony-chicago.jpg

Alt Text Example:

"Bride and groom during their Chicago wedding ceremony at sunset"

🌐 5. URLs (aka Slugs)

Your page links matter too. Make them short, clean, and keyword-relevant.

Instead of:
/page-3 or /services-new
Use:
/wedding-photography or /custom-home-design

How to edit it:

  • Go to Page Settings → URL Slug

✅ Keep slugs lowercase and hyphen-separated.

Quick Tips for Using Keywords the Smart Way

  • Don’t overdo it. Google penalizes keyword stuffing.

  • Use variations. If your keyword is “custom website design,” mix in “Squarespace websites,” “branding-focused websites,” etc.

  • Make every page focused. Give each page a clear purpose and main keyword.

  • Think like your customer. What would they search for to find you?

Final Thoughts

Adding keywords to your Squarespace site isn’t about gaming the system — it’s about helping the right people find you. Think of keywords as the bridge between what people are searching for and what you offer.

Start small. Pick one keyword per page. Add it naturally to the places above. Then keep creating great content and watch your visibility grow.
